The video clip "Pink Slime Beef With Ammonia - Jamie Oliver Food Revolution" is from our Education Schools and Colleges Category.
Video Details: In this video clip Jamie Oliver demonstrates how 70% of America's ground beef contains leftover cow parts (a.k.a. "pink slime") containing e.coli and salmonella that has been treated with ammonia. Ammonia treated meat can be found in virtually all conventional grocery stores, fast food restaurants, many national restaurant chains, and school cafeterias. The saddest part is that the USDA allows this ammonia treated meat to enter the marketplace and with no labeling requirement on the packaging to inform the consumer that the meat they are about to buy contains ammonia. This is certainly a rude awakening to the majority of Americans that don't know where the meat in their fridge, the meat in their conventional local grocery store, the meat in their fast food hamburger, and the meat in their restaurant made hamburger comes from.
Pink slime is composed of mechanically-separated beef trimmings, parts of the cow that once were only used for dog food, not human consumption. In March 2012, ABC News ran a series of reports noting that 70 percent of ground beef in U.S. supermarkets contains pink slime.
The term "pink slime" was coined by Dr. Gerald Zirnstein to refer to the resulting products in an internal email which Zirnstein wrote after the product was approved by the USDA over his objections. Zirnstein has stated "I do not consider the stuff to be ground beef, and I consider allowing it in ground beef to be a form of fraudulent labeling."
In the United States, the additive itself cannot legally be sold directly to consumers, but can constitute up to 15% of ground beef without additional labeling. Pink slime is not permitted in Canada. In a statement, Health Canada stated that: "Ammonia is not permitted in Canada to be used in ground beef or meats during their production." Pink slime also does not meet the legal requirements for sale in the United Kingdom.
